Helpful hint! Loosen the nut but leave it on the shaft up near the top of the threads. I use an old piece of axle placed on top of the nut and then tap on the other end of the axle to dislodge the shaft from the gear. Make sure you don't bugger the threads on that shaft. If you have removed the lower bolster and front wheels, make sure you have something on the floor to cushion the upper bolster shaft when it comes out of the upper bolster. That thing is quite heavy.
