I will retract my previous statement--don't think that's a prototype. As to the rod on the right side of the grille it could be a rod for row marking, as you say, but it does not appear to be directly in front of the operator, although perhaps it doesn't need to be, as it was probably used to make only the first pass. My dad had two B's in the 40's, and did not use a rod to sight on when planting or marking rows, as you could see the the front wheels (he used a single front for that purpose) and center them over the mark made by the marker on the back of the planter. I would guess that the starter and lights were installed after the tractor was put into use. Since Delco Remy made the same starter and lights for other manufacturers, it is logical (to me anyway) that they were painted black by Delco. When installed at the IH factory, they were painted red like everything else. Those are good pictures, thanks for posting them.
