Early 400 used same head for gas and LPG up to engine seriel # 161365 acording to some sorces.
Casting # 362174. Later ones for 400 through 450
is casting #364586.Don't know which head you have
but there is many things that could cause your problem other than compression.Fuel mixture,timing,distributor wear that lets total
spark advance go to high is common,or you could
have vacum leak on intake,plus other things that are to long winded for here.But if you're worried about head I will gladly trade you a gas head for late LP head.
