Well you investigated the problem much more then I did. I have a older gentleman that works on my tractor for me. He was working on them when they were new so I hope he knows what he is going. He said they all do that, make that sound. All the bearings in my front end are worn and I guess when I replace them all, I will look into the steering pump. The fact that mine is so much worse at colder temperatures, I can believe it has to do with the pump sucking in air as the hytran fluid is so much thicker in the cold. One thing I have also noticed is that under no power, my steering pump is just about useless. I cannot turn my wheels at all. I have to go and move them by hand if needed.
