Timing is important. After TDC is probably too late. TDC or just slightly ahead is gonna work better. I suggest following the book on timing the mag, then try again. Mine started right up with the crank after an engine rebuild. Because of the impulse on the mag, you can be advanced a bit, and the impulse will act as a retarder at cranking speed. If you are not sure of the timing, the pushing it to start may be a safe choice.
