Kip: The 404 is one tractor I have never seen up close anyhow. This includes both Farmall and utility models. I do have an IT manual here as the tractor is in same book with 130, 140, etc. As I see it this the 404 is really a newer, improved version of the 240, more engine, wider range of transmission choices. The 404 is a tractor that never sold many copies. IH's own competition from British diesels with live pto actually sold for less money. They actually sold for less money than a 140. For whatever reason IH management decided to price the 140 and 404 off the market. They will claim because it was cheaper to build tractors in Britain. That may be, but I think the British would have been smart enough to build a 140 or a 404. The 140 did survive for another 10 years, then they did manage to kill the offset tractor with offshore junk.
