Hi JB, Just taken the oil pan off tonight. Yes the front end of the tractor is basically bolted to the engine with 8 bolts (2 columns of 4 bolts fitted vertically. I&T book says support the middle of the tractor and then remove bottom 6 bolts and loosen the top pair. You can then remove the pan bolts and remove the pan. Well I started doing this, but when I saw the front end starting to move away from the engine I stopped - it looked too scarey. So I rang a chap here in the UK that specializes in used IH for his advice as he does loads of these. He said to only remove the bottom 4 bolts and leave the top 4 done up. There is no need to support the middle of the tractor this way (although I left mine in place). Anyway I think this is a much better method. You will need to make sure you've got all the bolts out (some are hidden at the back of the pan) and then gently knock the pan down with a hammer and block of wood. I also put a car jack under the pan to help lower it as it's pretty heavy. I'll keep you posted with further developments.
