I was wondering if I could use a modern 10W30 multiweight oil in place of the old single weight. I would like to use this in cold weather, but with the single weight oil, it seems to start pretty slowly when it is cold. When the weather warms up, it starts fine (what with the carb kit, new cables and alternator I put in as well - thanks Hugh and all you others for advice). The engine was well cleaned during the cylinder work, so it is not loaded up internally with sludge like some old engines I have seen. Will multiweight oil make it a more 3 season machine, or could it cause some sort of harm?
