I have never run a tractor higher than second gear except for transporting. That is with mowing, chopping, baling, and plowing. It just seems to me that I do a better job at lower speed and 540 rpm. In the 80's, I mowed with a Ford 501 mower and a B 414 tractor. When I went to repair the worn out engine all I needed to do was replace the rings. Bearing clearance for the crank had not changed on the plastic gauge. I find I wear machines out versus breaking them. Many of you guys talk of mowing 60 acres a day, etc. I realize that to run a commercial operation you must have capacity. But,on a small, stoney acreage and shooting for top yield per unit, should I consider speeding it up for the equipments' sake? I like to sell my older equipment for about what I pay for it, and have been successful this way for 30 years.

To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
