What the horspower IS can vary quite a bit. Most of those old M tractors have been overhauled more than once, and likely got the overbore kits put in them. For an M that was used for serious farm work, it's not uncommon to find one that will produce 50+ hp if it's tuned correctly. The plow rating depends a lot on soil type. With M&W or Firecrater power and some added weight, they'll pull a 3-14 or 3-16 anywhere in central Indiana in 2nd gear, most places in 3rd.
