Procedure calls for switching back to gas side for shutdown, then shutting off the gas to the carb and running all the gas out. After doing this be sure to switch back to diesel so the decompression valves will be on their seats to cool. If not on the diesel side after shutdown, the valves can warp. However, if it takes 30 minutes of fiddling to get it going, I doubt that the shutdown procedure is your problem on starting. I grew up on one of these things, and we never switched to gas for shut down. We always just pushed the throttle lever down to shut off and left it. Never had much trouble starting it. So...I expect you have some problem with the starting set up. You need to check that all is working as designed on the switch over system. Do you have a good ignition spark and is the switch located in the front of the manifold still connected and working correctly. The chamber in the front of the manifold is where the ignition switch is located to ground the magneto and shut off the spark, That swithc is operated by the switch over lever. The switchover lever also works butterflys in the manifold to direct air through the carb on the gas side. Also, works the float in the carb so that it is raised up on the diesel side to stop gas flow. Check that you are getting gas flow on the gas side by opening the petcock on the carb with lever in gas position. And finally, check the operation of the decompression valves which are also operated by the switch over lever. There is a clearance setting for these and they may not be opening enough. YOu have to remove the valve cover to set this valve clearance. I find in starting my MD, that it takes full choke for it to start even in warm weather and then gradually decreasing choke as it warms. Usually starts on about the third crank, even after sitting for quite a while.

A Lifetime of David Brown - by Samuel Kennedy. I was born in 1950 and reared on my family’s 100 acre farm. It was a fairly typical Northern Ireland farm where the main enterprise was dairying but some pigs, poultry and sheep were also kept. Potatoes were grown for sale and oats were grown to be used for cattle and horse feeding. Up to about 1958 the dairy cows were fed hay with some turnips and after that grass silage was the main winter feed. That same year was the last in which flax was grown on the farm. Flax provided the fibre which w
