There's a pretty good book you can buy. It's called "Trailers, How to Design & Build",(Volume 1 Basics) by M.M. Smith. Copyright 1995, ISBN 0-914483-31-5. I own it and it's excellent! It covers design, metals, axles, brakes, wiring, hitches, welding, etc.

I couldn't find it on booksamillion dot com but I didn't look long, and I didn't try other sites like Barnes and Noble, Hastings, etc.

ALSO try tjtrailers dot com. They sell blueprints of all kinds for about $25. You can look at them and see what you think. You'll incorporate your own ideas, but with a well designed trailer, at least you'll know it's engineered to handle specific loads.
