I have one of each. A JD 430 converted to 12 volt first and used a 12 volt coil with internal resister. Second was a SMTA and I used Bob M's diagram and used the resister. Both work good, resister was w whole lot less expensive. I converted the SMTA to a starter button with a solenoid. For starting it by passes the resister for hotter spark. Resisters go out occasionally, have been told the internal ones in coils do too. Guess it is your choice.
