Front snow blade shoes

In my earlier posting, I read a couple of follow ups mentioning shoes on the front snow blade. I remember plowing snow as a kid with a jeep that had mushroom shaped bumpers on it. It sounds like these or shoes are a needed addition to my front blade that currently has nothing. Two questions for this experienced group:
1) How big are these shoes, can I make them?
2) Do you just drop the blade onto the shoes? Or do you still keep some up hydraulic pressure. Thanks for shortening my learning curve and saving my driveway.
