According to Guy Fay's Tractor Data Book the speed of the SMTA in 1st gear is 2 mph, 1 5/8 mph with torque back. That would be at rated rpm of 1,600 rpm. Unless you are driving something off of the pto then you should not have a problem getting down to less than 1 mph. You will not have rated horsepower at slower engine speeds but that should not be a problem with the SMTA. These old girls have amazing luggin power even at lower engine speeds. Unless there is a compelling reason to get down to less than 1 mph you will find that 1st gear does not step along very fast.
