Michael: Which tractor was it? The 250 you have is prone to this if you happen to have presure on it one way or the other, by having the steering wheels in a turning position. Usually all it takes is turn the wheels quick the other way. This problem will be worse in cold weather or after periods on non use. I suspect also there must be a spring to make that disengage, as the 250 diff lock is nothing more than a collar on one splined shaft sliding onto another splined shaft when you step on pedal. You may have a broken spring in there. The two shafts in question are your brake shafts. I think your 584 is a bit more sophisticated.
