There also a couple of oddities with the tractor's electrics. As I said, a service manual will be coming but in the meantime... The tractor has an alternator. Voltage at the battery yesterday was 12.7 with one cable off, 12.50 with the cable attached and engine running. There is a large ceramic resistor but no external regulator visible so I guess it is internally regulated. Perhaps whoever made the mod thought a system designed for six volts would be OK with the battery less than fully charged. (?) The ignition switch didn't kill the engine, so I choked it, disconnected the negative cable, and looked around. All the wires have been cut at the switches and lamps. Not sure if that was to avoid durning out lamps with the higher voltage, or due to concern about positive vs negative grounding. The ignition is hotwired somewhere. The starter works ok. There is a six inch long wire attached to the outside of the distributer. It seems it might be the ignition wire but I'm not sure. A pressure switch is connected at a T beside the oil pressure gauge, with wires running up near the battery. I haven't traced them yet but the local antique Caterpiller man thinks they may be intended to isolate the alternator from the battery when the engine is stopped. I'd like to chat with anyone who has insight into these sorts of things! Fred
