756 german diesel thermostat

I am working on a 756 with the 310 german diesel and the thermostat is bad, local dealer says they don't make this thermostat any more. It is the self contained canister type with the inlet and outlet to radiator on the ends and the bypass back to the water pump coming off the side. The only one the dealer can get has bypass coming out of one end which would make it just about impossible to mount without it portruding out of the hood.
Any information on where I could get a new one or good used one like the original would be appreciated.
