Ted - The answer here is “it depends”! If the charging system is manually-regulated (has a simple cutout relay and a 4-position light switch) simply leave the light switch on the “H” (high charge) position. The existing setup will charge your 8 volt battery with no particular difficulty. However if your tractor is a later model with a voltage regulator (or had a cutout replaced with a regulator), the regulator's set point will need to be tweaked up to about 9.6 volts for it to supply a reasonable amount of charge current - exactly as Buzzman and Mark suggest.

BUT....as long as your starter and battery cables are in good condition you shouldn’t need an 8 volt battery in the first place. A healthy 6 volt battery will easily spin your higher compression A engine. Often a “slow crank” problem is traced to the battery cables and connections. If the cables are original, good chance they have high resistance from internal (hidden) corrosion. And if the cables have been replaced, many times the replacement cables are several wire gages too small. If either of these situations apply, replacing existing cables with new ones of the correct gage can work wonders.

Bottom line is it’s generally more prudent to spend $$ getting the cranking system back into good order than to spend the same $$ on an 8 volt battery “band aid fix”.
