F12 front end

Our F12 has a very ugly mickey-moused front end adapted to it. We are considering looking for an original and I assume there are a few styles available. It is not essential that it be the same version it was built with.
Any input/comments as to pros and cons of the various styles or as to what would be more easily obtainable?
Is there a way to find out from serial (or otherwise) what style front end it would have been built with?
