Just curious, was it an intake or exhaust valve spring retainer? It's been awhile since I had an "M" apart, but I wonder if the intake valves have rubber seals around the guides. I looked in my 450 parts book. It doesn't show them being used, but I think in the last fel-pro gasket set I used, they were included. I really don't believe that oil leaking by the valve guide will foul a spark plug. I think you may be dealing with 2 different problems here. Chances are that you have worn/stuck rings or worn sleeves, or both. Either way, you're probably looking at an overhaul and a valve grind. I like to have things running right, but it's a tough choice....add oil and change a couple spark plugs, or possibly upwards of $1000 for a complete overhaul. That's my thoughts. Good Luck.
