Rick, You did a few things that you didn't need to. Once you removed the plug on the pedestal you didn't need to remove the cotter pin and bearing. They turn out with the worm gear, no need to take them off. If you disconnect the steering shaft at the center of the tractor you should be able to screw the shaft out the front of the pedestal.
