Posted by Brad in VA on March 22, 2004 at 11:42:21 from (198.176.41.2):

I just bought a IH 574 at a auction in Clover VA on sat. Didnt really want it but was bidding and ended up with it. The tractor is a diesel. I had some questions about it.
1) There is a leaver on the right side of the driver down close to the floor that has a sticker around it the shows the tractor going forward and backwards. When it is in the middle the tractor moves when you let out on the clutch. If you pull it backwards it growls and pulls on the motor???? What is this????
2) Are there any problems with these that need attention??? The guy who had it before didnt like much greese. On the three point anyways. The front looked good though.
3) It has 13.6/36 tires on the rear, from what I can find out it should of had 28" tires on the rear. It was tobacco country down there, is that why???
4) Does anyone know of a good parts place for them?? I need the battery door and some knobs for the levers, a grill and the schroud around the grill.
5) How do the do in the field??? We do alot of hay and raise cattle. I wanted it for raking and tedding. Will it handle the round baler or does it lack that kind of power (4'x4' bales)
6) This one is hard to get and keep in first. It goes in ok but you have to hold the handle up there untill you let out on the clutch or it will slip out of gear.

Any thoughts will be appericated.

Today's Featured Article - Uncle Cecil's Super A Lives Again - by Mike Purcell. A week or so out of most of my childhood summers was often spent with my Uncle Cecil and Aunt Sissie in the small East Texas town of Maydelle on their 80 acre farm. Some of my fondest memories of these visits are those of learning to drive a tractor at the helm of Uncle Cecil’s 1948 Farmall Super A. Uncle Cecil was the second owner of this wonderful little tractor, but it was almost as though he had adopted an infant. The original owner was a man from Minnesota who bought her from a local dea ... [Read Article]
