hi bob Hold the phone!! wait a minute!! just some more info on your cub.. i will agree with Old about the clutch adjustment, yes do get a service manual and!!!!!the ih parts manual, check out the exploded view of the clutch housing,,BUT!! there are two types of clutch operating rods on these machines, IH book #tc-37f group 07 pge 4. cubs with sn501 to 32228 has the adj. inside the clutch housing like Old said. cubs with sn32229and up (like mine )have the adjustment on the clutch pedal!! much easier to adjust.. yours is a 54 so it should be like mine (thought something didn`t sound right) check this out first before you split the tractor!!!!!! look for 1 3/16" clutch pedal freeplay, (original cub manual pg.40 red cover, 1949),and make sure you get the o&m and parts manuals the info you will get from these books will pay you back 10 to 20 fold the amount you`ll pay for them 30 to 100$ I prefer the IH books ,you can look online for case ih dealers they`ll know what your looking for.. good luck
