Thanks everybody - the studs and rocker arm shaft were misaligned and the rocket shaft was forced on so hard that even with a webbing under each stanchion and two come a longs the webbing lifted the entire engine with out anything budging. This was a recently overhauled engine!!!! I tried unscewing the bolts but one broke off without a bit of movement. I finally got them off using a series of sharp chisels between the head and the stanchions. It was of course virtually impossible to remove the head with the valve train in place.
