Guy Fay and some others please correct me but IH didn't use white primer and in most cases didn't use any primer. I think they did use some sort of sealer on maybe their diesel engine blocks? In Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide it shows a Cub being painted and it's pretty much red paint going over bare metal. If the number checks out, and it sounds like it does, I would try to strip a good deal of the red paint off, and take LOTS of pictures! Make sure you document the serial number!
