During the Great Depression, folks would make do with whatever they had, and honey would lower the freezing point, so I guess it made sense to have that warning back then. Remember, honey was dang near free, it was sugar you couldn't afford. To his dying day, my dad didn't like honey, since he associated it with the Great Depression.
