Dave: Great to hear you are making progress. I had a No.60, 4x16 plow with those same plow chief bottoms. When you started describing what had happened I knew right away what you were dealing with. During the 5 years that I had my plow, I must have planted two dozen of those spear points. The annoying part was you couldn't get them to grow. By the time a spring tooth cultivator brought them to the surface they weren't worth using.

I later acquired another No.60 plow 4x16 with Super Chief bottoms. Much better set up, with the one piece disposable point and share. They had one kinky little problem also. I installed a new set of point-shares one day, started plowing and after a couple of rounds noticed some of them loose. I spent most of the afternoon tightening them. Next morning I called the IH dealers to tell them of my problem. His first question,"Did we give you right hand thread plow bolts?" I said."yes". They had just sold their first rollover plow with Super Chief bottoms. Super Chief bottoms require left hand thread on the right turning moldboards and right hand thread on the left turning moldboard. A new young lad in the parts dept had given me the wrong bolts. I had often wondered why they used left hand thread.

These items are called educating a farmer. The manual does tell about the bolts and thread. To a farmer on his 4th plow, I guess it's a case of reading the manual if all else fails. You could probably switch those Plow Chiefs for Super Chiefs. Watch the auction scene. With Super Chiefs you would have a better plow and one with much better availability of parts, particularly in the future. Just be aware Plow Chief was not used many years, they probably will become hard to find parts for.
