Pto Hydraulics on 1944 Farmall M leaking.

The hydraulic system on the pto looks like a Char lynn but I couldn't find any identifying labels. The unit is sealed with only one seal on the front where a shaft comes out with a sprocket on it which is hooked up to the pto via a chain drive. This seal is leaking badly and I'm not in the mood to replace it before spring. What will happen if I leave the oil level below the level of the seal? How full am I supposed to fill the pump anyway? If I need a new seal can you tell me what size etc.? Help.
