It sounds like the drive gear that is turned by the cam gear is off a tooth or so. You can change the timing in about 15° increments by pulling the housing loose and turning it one gear tooth. You can check this by noting when the mag impulse snaps. Look at the notch on the crank pulley in relation to the pointer on the gear cover. The mag drive turns in the same direction as the crankshaft.
