If you have an air compressor and a siphon gun you could spray diesel fuel or kerosene into the area and it will do a good job of cleaning. If you don't have a compressor get a brush, paint or straight handle cleaning brush and with kerosene start swabing it out. Put on some safety glasses and set to the side and plan to get plenty of kerosene on your arms. Since your dirt and gunk is already in the pan you should just get it out while the pan is off. Once you have done this you may want to use a small amount of transmission oil or Marvel Mystery oil as a cleaner mixed with the oil and change your filters often for a while.
