A 656, 666, or a 686 would be about perfect for you. 706 or 756 would be about right, too. You must also decide if you want a gas or diesel engine, since all of these models were commonly avalible with either. The 6-cylinder gas engines will start in temps so cold you wish they wouldn't, but they are very thirsty. The D-282 diesel in the 656 and most 706's is real easy on fuel, but is a hard starter if you don't keep the electical system in good shape. The D-310 German diesel in late 706's, 756 and late 686's is very reliable and easy on fuel, but it can be hard to start. I've never been around the 666 or early 686, so I can't tell you much about the D-312. A 544 is a fine machine, but it can be hard to find one exactly the way you want it, since it was avalible in every combination of gas or diesel, gear drive or hydro, and Row-Crop or Utility. A 544 is really just a 4-cylinder 656/666/686. Another option for you might be an 806 Diesel or 856 Diesel. These tractors might be a little big for you, but they are getting to be real cheap horsepower, they are easy on fuel, start good, and are about the most reliable IH tractors.
