it's less headache to rebuild the 263 parts are easily obtainable from IH and all the various aftermarket suppliers online and locally. i rebuilt a 263 myself (first engine ever)last fall..pretty straightforward--simple i thought. the torque curve of the sbc 350 is way higher than that of the ih 263 inline 6. the tractor runs at what 2400rpm wide open? the sbc is roughly in the 3000 rpm range when it performs best. if you want to put a chebby in there, then go with a 292 I6, it would have a closer torque curve to that of the 263 ih. or a ford 300cid... both the chev and fords are also used industrially on combines, shredders, what have you. but then that creates the extra chore of fabrication to make it all fit together. my vote is stick with the 263. -karl
