SMTA Should there be any play in crankcam pully?

I rebuilt the motor in my smta and I started it and it ran for 2 minutes, then surged twice and then stalled with a clunk soung at the end. I broke the cam pully right off the cam shaft. The only reason I can thidk of is that I changed my hydraulic hoses and when I put the oil in I didn't let the air out, the vint on the filler cap was plugged because 12 hours later I took the cap off and air can out under pressure.I guy said that maybe the gear was cracked. One guy said that there should be play between the cam and the crank gear. Help
