Yep, cardinal rule for IH diesel owners: Don't start the tractor in the barn. Generally speaking, diesels smoke, but IH diesels abuse the privelege. Try the ATF in the fuel to clean the injectors, they are probably gunked up a bit, that will improve the burn in the chamber. And get it off idle, but nothing real fast without a load. Mine likes about 1800 RPM for mowing, runs just like a sewing machine, plenty of torque lift when we hit a tough spot, 1200 or so for dirt work, etc. If I were plowing or disking, 1800, cultivating, 1000 to 1200. Nothing slower, you need the diesel to burn well in the chamber. Diesels will "slobber" on idle, which means that you don't get everything burned and liquid or gooey black stuff may even come out of the exhaust. Try something. Take the canister off the tractor and look up inside of the canister. You might find the steel wool looking stuff up in there. I tried to take mine out to clean it and found that it was in a container that is welded inside the canister. The bottom part that comes off has a baffle and would only contain whatever oil you would put in. If it is empty, take it to a NAPA parts store or an IH Case dealer and find out what goes in there. Good luck, keep us posted.

If i said that this was a little frustrating for him that would be "conservative" in fact the problem had reduce
