544 Utility Carb question

I inherited my Dad's 544U last year and am trying toi get it functional again. Since the tool he liked best was a hammer, that's what he fixed everything with. THe carb (And manifold - he had an anger manegement problem) got smashed the last time it wouldn't start. I took the pieces to several dealers and repair shops and was told by all that it was no carb they have ever seen before, and may have been something put together from pieces of several other carbs. The parts manuals and catalogs list 3 different carbs for this model. Some with a fuel shut off solenoid, some without. First question is - How do I determine the best carb to buy, 2nd, is the fuel shutoff solenoid necessary or at least reccommended?
