HELP! Best way to press out impeller shaft?

I tried pressing out the impeller shaft of the water pump off my model 100 today and cracked the housing. We had it supported on two sides and the shaft was staring to move then the casting cracked. We were trying to press the shaft off the impeller, toward the front or pulley, is this the correct direction? Is this a common problem? What is the best way to press/remove the shaft without cracking the housing? Thanks for your time and help.
