The plugs on the sides of the axle housings are the check/fill plugs. The drain plugs are at the very bottom of the axle housings, gotta crawl underneath the tractor to see them. Axle housings take Hy-Tran. Yes, it is confusing, and most guys don't know to check/change the axle housings. IH took care of that problem about halfway through the 56 sereis by drilling a hole between the differential housing and the axle housing, making it all one compartment. 06's get updated when the rear end is apart by drilling 1/2" holes on each side and knocking out the freeze plug between the inner axle bearing and the differential housing.
