Rod, The slide hammer puller is the same thing used in autobody shops and refered to as "slide-hammer" dent puller. They are about 16" long with a screwdriver looking handle with about a 3/8"-7/16" shaft over which slides the "hammer" (about a 4" long, 1-3/4" diameter heavy sleeve with grooves in it for grip). The far end has a chuck looking thing that holds a heavy gauge sheet metal screw. You drill a pilot hole in the old seal about two drill sizes smaller than the screw in the puller (I'd drill about 3 or 4 at 12/3/6/9 o'clock) then screw the pullers screw into the pilot hole down to the chuck. Hang onto the handle with one hand and slide the "hammer" hard against the handle with the other hand. You should see the old seal break loose after a few "whacks". Keep doing this around the seal until you can just pull it out of the housing. Pullers are sold at most auto parts places and Sears. Good luck with it. FB
