FARMALL 460 T/A

I have a 1960 Farmall 460 equipped with a Torque Amplifier. I am not familiar with this piece of equipment. While backing down a small grade I noticed that the engine wasn't holding the tractor back, in other words it was free-wheeling; later the same day while going forward down the same grade with the T/A engaged the tractor free-wheeled again, when I disengaged the T/A the engine started to hold the tractor and load back. When pulling aload the T/A seems to work all right. Is this how a T/A is supposd to operate?
When I bought the tractor I thought the T/A worked like a Hi/Lo range and would offer extra pulling power and braking power in hilly terrain.
Any information on the T/A will be appreciated.
Also, what would be the weight of this tractor? It is a 6 cyl. gas. Thanks.
