I like to back my tractor on a trailer, but I've got a front-end loader. If I have a 3pt implement I'll usually drive it straight on. I also like to get about 10% the gross (trailer + load) on the hitch regardless what I'm hauling without overloading the spec for the hitch. Since I'm not always close to town where I can weigh it and adjust my load, most of the time I just have to guess by the "squat" of the truck. Your 3000lb tractor with weights and fluid is probably closer to 4000 plus another 1000 for the trailer. If your hitch can handle it, I'd try to get 400-500 lbs on the ball. (About as much "squat" as a couple linebackers standin' on yer bumper)
