The advantage of the magneto is that it requires no battery for the tractor to run. If the battery is dead, you can crank or pull the tractor to start and it will run just as well with the battery dead. If you have a dead battery with a distributor and ignition coil, difficult to get things going without a good battery. Also, I think the points and condenser in the magneto last a lot longer and in my experience with proper maintenance, not much goes wrong with the mags.
