I think they just wanted something more "modern", same as when people put "electronic" ignitions on old tractors. Dealers probably had something to do with that too, encouraging the farmer to put on a modern distributer rather than repair the old mag. The mags were really pretty trouble free. And you could start them with a crank. However, I have a Super A with a distributer, and have been too lazy to fix the charging system. When the battery doesn't have enough juice to turn over the engine, it will start with a crank. Of course that won't work if the battery is completely discharged.
