Matt can't put in backwards the spline on the shaft not same as gear on direct drive, the grove for the fork would not be in right place. Your problem is in the shift linkage under deck plate, if it is not good and tight it will not move the gear far enough forward, but the gears will have some space between the slider and the one it slides on. The first 56's had a problem with this, until they changed the cut on the gears, I would file the noch for the detent so gear would ingage more and that helped. You must remember that if a sliding gear is warn bad you will never hold it in gear no matter what you do.... So make sure linkage is good and tight.
