Mike: I do something similar to what you propose. I have one tractor set on 52" centers wheel tread and the other on 60" That way I can plant single rows just about any width over 40". I can plant 2- 26" rows, 3- 20", 2- 30" rows. I have tried exactly what you propose and found wheel tread setting of 48" best. This puts your 3 rows in 2' and gives you 1' to center of tire on each side. When doing the single row as in corn you can get them in at about 34" without doing too much damage to corn under 1' in height. I might add that worked well with one tractor, but switched after getting second tractor. I found there were not enough items I could use the 12" rows with. I find 20" better when considering a wide variety of crops.
