When an engine stops it will coast to the cylinder with the most compression and stop. This makes the engine hard to get underway with a weak battery or poor starter. Often the ring gear on the flywheel with get the teeth worn or knocked off at this spot also causing a problem. Rotating the engine to get off this spot will often remedy a lot of faults. I have a diesel that has a bad spot on the flywheel(defective starter drive gear damage) since the hourmeter only had 50 hours on it and now it has 2565 hours. When I shut the engine down I always let the clutch out causing the engine to stop under load and not coasting to the highest compression cylinder. Rarely causes a problem and when eventually I install a new clutch I will replace or turn over the ring gear.
