Pete - If your coil is internally ballasted (a so called "12 volt" coil) it doesn't require an external resistor. However if you still have a 6 volt resistor, running it on 12 volts will burn out the points prematurely, also will overheat and ruin the coil after a while.

How to tell whether the coil is 6 or 12 volt? Look to see if it's marked "12 volt" on the outside. If not marked, check the current draw with the engine stopped and the switch on. 2 - 3 amps means it's internally ballasted; 4 - 6 amps means you need a ballast resistor. Or simply feel the coil after the engine's run 10 - 15 minutes - if the coil is hot to the touch you need to add a resistor!

Regarding your single wire alternator question, these units have a regulator inside.
