It would be best to hit them on the journal of the piston rod. Use a block of wood so you don't damage anything. Take the rod caps off and you should be able to work the crankshaft into a position so you can get a good wack at them. Make sure that you take out the rod bearing. If you don't have the head off, you should take the spark plugs out so that you won't be trying to compress the air in the cylinder
