I agree with little john. I'd do a mini-tune up - or at least confirm that the tune-up specs are in range - check on points gap with a dwell meter (should be 60 degrees), check the timing, clean and gap the plugs. Then run your coil check - pull the center wire from the coil out of the distributor cap and hold the end of the wire about 1/16" to 1/8" from a good ground. Turn the engine over and you should see a bluish-white spark. If it's yellow the coil is probably on its way out. You'll probably want to do this after it starts running bad. Another problem I encountered was a bad external resistor in line with the coil. It had been converted to 12V but the coil was still 6V - hence the external resistor. When that resistor got hot, the engine would die and I couldn't restart it. I'd let it cool and it would run again. I narrowed it down to the resistor by leaving the battery connected and pulling out the shut-off switch. I'd leave it like that for five minutes and the resistor would heat up to the point it would be again in the no start condition. To simplify the system, I replaced both the resistor and the coil with a 12V coil with a built-in resistor. It's been purring every since. HTH

Product Review: Lead Substitutes - by Mike Schordine. Lead was oriinally added to gasoline as an upper cylinder lubricant. It lubes the valves and seats. If you rebuild the motor, you could use hardened seats and valves, and unleaded fuel. But if your old tractor runs good, a simple lead substitute added to the gas is a perfectly reasonable solution. And, if you are like me, your tractor is under cover, but it sits outside. So with every temperature change, the humidity in the air collects in the fuel tank, in the form of water.
