Jim, I think you're refering to the short piece of wire that looks like it was wound around a pencil and is attached to two terminals on the switch block. This is a dimmer resistance for the headlights and not a heater. (Unless IH slipped a mod in there on me when I had my back turned), I've never known that box to have a heater in it. The value of that dimmer resistance is suppose to be 5 ohms and as a resistor, it disipates current when you are running the lights on "Dim" I suspect you may have a wire connected wrong inside the dust proofed relay box. Your M service manual would be a good source for a correct wiring diagram. BTW, you don't have cigarette lighter mounted in that box do you? I've known some farmers to mount one in there for light'n stogies on the go! Good luck! FB
